1. R.I.P. Russell Hoban

    Our thoughts are with the family of Russell Hoban, who died last night at age 86. Most famous for his post-apocalyptic novel Ridley Walker, Hoban’s first became known for his children’s books, including the stories of Frances the Badger, often illustrated by his wife Lillian, Garth Williams (who also illustrated The Rescuers), or himself. Last year we reissued The Sorely Trying Day, written by Russell and illustrated by Lillian. Here’s the first page:
